Waterloo Carpet Cleaning Health And Safety Policy
Waterloo Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our employees, customers, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with carpet, upholstery, and hard floor cleaning services within the areas we operate.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective control measures. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards, and we will regularly review and improve our procedures to ensure they remain effective and appropriate to the nature of our work.
Health and safety is a core part of how we operate. All employees, regardless of their role, are required to follow this policy, cooperate with management, and take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Responsibilities
The management of Waterloo Carpet Cleaning holds overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety policy. Management will provide the necessary resources, information, instruction, and supervision to ensure that health and safety standards are met and continuously improved.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for ensuring that cleaning operatives follow safe working practices on each job, including the correct use of equipment, chemicals, and personal protective equipment. They are also responsible for reporting and recording any incidents, near misses, or hazards identified on site.
All employees have a duty to work safely, follow training and instructions, use the equipment provided in a safe manner, wear the required protective equipment, and immediately report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or concerns to management.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before undertaking cleaning work at any property, Waterloo Carpet Cleaning will assess the risks associated with the tasks to be performed. This includes consideration of access and egress routes, trip hazards, electrical safety, chemical handling, use of machinery, and the presence of vulnerable persons such as children, elderly people, or pets.
Safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to staff for all key tasks, such as hot water extraction cleaning, stain removal treatments, upholstery cleaning, hard floor maintenance, and the moving of furniture. Staff are required to follow these procedures at all times to minimise risk to themselves, customers, and property.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Many of the products used in carpet and upholstery cleaning contain substances that must be handled with care. All cleaning solutions and treatments used by Waterloo Carpet Cleaning will be selected to balance effectiveness with safety, and will be used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations.
We maintain information on all substances used as part of our cleaning services. Employees are trained in safe handling, dilution, application, storage, and disposal of chemicals. Where required, appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, masks, or eye protection will be worn. Chemicals will never be left unattended where they could be accessed by children or pets, and containers will remain clearly labelled at all times.
Use of Equipment and Electrical Safety
Our cleaning machines, tools, and accessories will be regularly inspected, serviced, and maintained to ensure they remain in safe working condition. Any defective equipment will be removed from use immediately and reported to management.
When working at customer premises, we will take particular care with the use of electrical equipment, cables, and hoses. Wherever possible, cables will be routed to avoid creating trip hazards. Staff are instructed not to overload sockets, not to use damaged plugs or leads, and to keep electrical equipment away from water sources except where designed for safe proximity.
Working In Customer Premises
Respect for customer properties and occupants is central to our safety approach. Before starting work, our operatives will explain the areas being cleaned and identify any potential hazards. Where necessary, warning signs will be displayed to highlight wet floors or trip hazards, and customers may be advised to keep clear of certain areas until they are dry and safe.
We will take care when moving or repositioning furniture and will not move any items that appear unstable, excessively heavy, or unsafe to handle. If a task presents unacceptable risk, work will be stopped and alternative arrangements will be discussed with the customer.
Personal Protective Equipment
Waterloo Carpet Cleaning will provide suitable personal protective equipment for tasks where additional protection is required. Depending on the nature of the work, this may include gloves, masks or respirators, eye protection, knee pads, and protective footwear.
Employees are required to use the protective equipment provided, keep it in good condition, and report any faults or damage promptly so that it can be repaired or replaced.
Training and Competence
All employees will receive appropriate health and safety training relevant to their role. This includes induction training, task-specific training for machinery and chemicals, and refresher training where needed. We ensure that staff are competent to carry out the work assigned to them and understand both the risks and the control measures in place.
Special attention is given to new employees and those with less experience, who will be supervised closely until they demonstrate safe and competent working practices.
Accident, Incident, and Near Miss Reporting
Waterloo Carpet Cleaning encourages a culture of prompt reporting for accidents, incidents, and near misses. All such events must be reported to management as soon as possible so that appropriate action can be taken and details recorded. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
Where required by law, incidents will be reported to the appropriate authorities. We will also cooperate fully with any external investigations or inspections relating to health and safety matters.
Health and Welfare
The health and welfare of our employees is important to us. Work schedules are planned to reduce unnecessary physical strain, and staff are encouraged to adopt safe manual handling techniques at all times. We will take reasonable steps to prevent work-related stress and will support employees who raise concerns about their health or workload.
Any employee with a medical condition that may affect their ability to work safely is encouraged to inform management so that appropriate support and adjustments can be considered.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains relevant to our services, working practices, and legal requirements. Where changes in legislation, technology, or our operations occur, the policy and associated procedures will be updated accordingly.
All employees will be informed of any significant changes to this policy and will receive additional training where required. Our commitment is to continuously improve our health and safety performance, protect everyone affected by our work, and provide high quality cleaning services delivered in a safe and responsible manner.
